When Prayer Feels Hard Because Your Nervous System Is Overwhelmed
Desaray Wilson | Certified Nurse Coach
Have you ever sat down to pray only to realize your mind won't slow down?
You want to spend time with God, but your thoughts are racing. Your body feels restless. You read the same verse three times because you can't focus. Or maybe you don't even know what to say.
Then the guilt creeps in. "Why can't I just pray?" … "What's wrong with me?"
If you've ever felt this way, I want you to know something. Nothing is wrong with your faith. Your nervous system may simply be overwhelmed.
Your body was designed to protect you.
When you've been carrying stress for weeks, months, or even years, your nervous system becomes focused on survival. Its job isn't to help you feel deeply connected. Its job is to keep you safe. That means your brain is constantly scanning for what needs your attention.
The laundry.
The kids.
The deadlines.
The text you forgot to answer.
The conversation you're replaying.
Even when you desperately want to be with God, your body may still be communicating, "We're not safe enough to slow down yet." That's not a spiritual failure. It's biology.
God isn't asking you to overcome your nervous system before coming to Him.
A scripture that I read recently that stuck with me is found in Matthew 11:28:
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Notice what Jesus doesn't say. He doesn't say, Come to me once you've calmed yourself down. He doesn't say, Come to me after you've figured everything out. He simply says, Come. God isn't waiting for a perfectly regulated version of you. He welcomes the overwhelmed one, too.
Prayer doesn't have to look perfect.
Sometimes we've unknowingly turned prayer into another task we have to accomplish. We think we need thirty uninterrupted minutes. The perfect quiet time. The perfect words. The perfect heart posture. But God has never asked you to come to Him perfectly. He's only asked you to come. Some days your prayer might simply be:
"Jesus, I'm overwhelmed."
"I don't have the words today."
"Help me."
"I need You."
Those are still prayers. And God hears every one.
Sometimes your body needs a moment before your words come.
As a Registered Nurse and Board-Certified Nurse Coach, I've learned that caring for the body often creates space for the heart. Before opening your Bible or beginning your prayer time, try helping your nervous system settle first.
Take one slow breath. Feel your feet on the floor. Notice the chair supporting your body. Look around the room and intentionally notice signs of safety. Not because these practices replace prayer. But because they can help quiet the constant alarm your body has been carrying, making it a little easier to receive God's presence.
God is with you whether your mind is quiet or racing. Helping your body settle doesn't bring Him closer, it simply helps you notice His presence.
God's presence doesn't depend on how calm you feel.
There will be seasons when prayer feels effortless. There will also be seasons when every prayer feels scattered. Neither changes God's faithfulness. In fact, Scripture reminds us:
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words." — Romans 8:26
Even when your mind feels overwhelmed and you don't know what to pray, you are not praying alone. The Holy Spirit meets you in your weakness, carrying what you cannot put into words.
Your ability to focus does not determine God's ability to hear you. He isn't measuring the eloquence of your prayers or waiting for you to get your thoughts together before coming to Him. His invitation remains the same: come as you are.
A gentle reminder
If prayer has felt difficult lately, don't assume God has moved away. He hasn't. Perhaps your nervous system has simply been carrying more than it was ever meant to carry alone. Today, let your prayer be simple. Let it be honest. And let yourself believe that God's grace is wide enough to meet you exactly where you are. You don't have to earn His presence. You only have to come.
If this resonated with you, I'd love to invite you to slow down with me.
