The Truth About Holding It All Together

Desaray Wilson | Certified Nurse Coach

No one tells you how exhausting it is to always be the strong one.

To be the one everyone depends on.
The one who remembers the appointments.
The one who keeps the house running.
The one who checks on everyone else.
The one who says, "I'm fine," before anyone even has a chance to ask.

From the outside, your life probably looks like it's under control.

You're responsible.
Capable.
Reliable.

People admire how much you can handle. What they don't see is what it costs you. They don't see the nights your mind won't slow down. The tears you hold back because you don't even know where to begin. The way your chest feels tight after another day of carrying everyone else's needs while quietly ignoring your own. Or how often you tell yourself, "I'll deal with it later."

Later becomes tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes next week. And before you know it, you've become a stranger to yourself.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that vulnerability was dangerous. Maybe no one ever said those words out loud. But we learned them anyway.

Don't cry.

Don't complain.

Don't be too emotional.

Be grateful.

Be strong.

Keep going.

So we did.

We became incredibly good at surviving. We learned how to smile while we were overwhelmed. How to laugh while we were anxious. How to say, "Everything's good," while silently wondering how much longer we could keep doing this. The hardest part? After a while, you stop hiding from everyone else. You start hiding from yourself. You stop asking what you need because you've convinced yourself it doesn't matter.

I think that's why so many women feel relief the moment someone simply says, "You don't have to hold it all together here."

Because underneath the anxiety...
Underneath the perfectionism...
Underneath the constant doing...

Is often a woman who is just tired. Tired of carrying the invisible weight. Tired of pretending she's okay. Tired of feeling like asking for help somehow means she's failing.

Here's what I've learned as a nurse and a nurse coach.

Your nervous system doesn't just respond to stress. It responds to loneliness. To silence. To constantly suppressing what's true. When you're always filtering your emotions, swallowing your words, and convincing yourself you'll be okay if you just push a little harder, your body never gets the message that it's safe to let go. That doesn't mean vulnerability magically fixes everything. But it does mean something begins to shift when you stop pretending. Sometimes the release isn't in having all the answers. Sometimes the release is finally saying, "I'm overwhelmed." "This is hard." "I don't know what I need yet, but I know I can't keep doing it this way." There is something deeply healing about being honest before you're completely falling apart.

If I'm honest, I think that's what so many of us are really craving. Not more advice. Not another morning routine. Not another podcast telling us how to optimize our lives. We want somewhere we can exhale. A place where we don't have to perform. Where we don't have to earn rest. Where we don't have to be the strong one for just a little while.

So if you've been carrying more than anyone realizes... Let this be your reminder. You don't have to wait until you hit burnout to tell the truth. You don't have to have the perfect words. You don't have to justify why you're tired. You don't have to keep proving how much you can carry. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is whisper, "I'm not okay." Not because it makes you weak. But because it finally gives your body permission to stop fighting so hard. And maybe... that's where healing begins.

You don't have to carry it all by yourself.
