You Love Being a Mom… So Why Don’t You Feel Like Yourself Anymore?

Desaray Wilson | Certified Nurse Coach

You love your kids. You’re grateful for the life you’ve built. You wouldn’t trade being their mom for anything. And yet, somewhere in the middle of motherhood, you may have started wondering: Where did I go?

Maybe you can’t even pinpoint when it happened. Life just got fuller. There were babies to care for, schedules to manage, meals to figure out, appointments to remember, work to show up for, and a never-ending list of things that somehow became yours to carry. You became really good at being Mom. But somewhere along the way, you stopped feeling like you.

When Motherhood Becomes Your Whole Identity

Motherhood changes you. Your priorities shift, your routines change, and the way you see yourself changes too. But sometimes being a mother begins to take up so much space that there doesn't seem to be much room left for the woman underneath it.

Someone asks what you like to do for fun, and you have to think about it.

You finally get time alone and don't know what to do with yourself.

You realize you haven't done something simply because you enjoy it in a really long time.

And the complicated part is that you love being a mom.

You don't want your old life back.

You just want to feel like a whole person inside of the life you have now.

There can be guilt in admitting that. But you can deeply love motherhood and still miss parts of yourself. You can be grateful and overwhelmed. You can love your family and crave space that belongs to you. Wanting to know yourself outside of motherhood doesn't take anything away from how much you love your children. It simply means you're still a woman inside of the role.

Your Nervous System Has Been Keeping Up, Too

Motherhood requires a lot of responding. Someone needs you. Something needs to be remembered. You're thinking three steps ahead while managing what's happening right in front of you. Over time, your nervous system can become really good at managing, anticipating, doing, and pushing through. And when so much of your attention is directed outward, it becomes harder to notice what's happening inward. You know what everyone else needs. But when someone asks what you need? You might not know. This is where nervous-system work and identity begin to overlap.

Reconnecting with yourself means learning how to notice yourself again, your body's signals, emotions, limits, preferences, desires, and capacity. Because sometimes you don't simply need a break from your life. You need connection with yourself inside of your life.

You Don't Need to Find the “Old You”

When we say, “I just want to feel like myself again,” it's easy to picture the woman we were before motherhood. But I don't think the goal is to go backward. Motherhood has changed you. There are parts of you that have grown, softened, strengthened, and transformed because you became a mother.

You don't need to find the old you. You get to discover who you are now. A woman who is a mother but isn't only a mother. A woman with her own relationship with God. Her own interests. Her own dreams. Her own needs. Her own boundaries. Her own voice. Maybe you're not trying to “get yourself back.” Maybe you're learning how to meet the woman you're becoming. And that can start small.

Ask yourself:

What makes me feel most like myself?

What parts of me have gotten quieter since becoming a mother?

What do I need that I keep dismissing?

Who am I becoming not just as a mother, but as a woman?

You don't need all the answers today. Start by noticing. Because you don't have to choose between being a present, loving mother and being connected to yourself. There is room for both.

This is so much of why I created ReNurture, not to help women become better at carrying everything, but to create space for the woman underneath everything she carries. Because motherhood can be a beautiful part of your identity without having to become your entire identity. Maybe this season isn't about finding your way back to who you used to be. Maybe it's about coming home to who you are now. 🌿
